Kingdom Vision

Build Up the Body of Christ
What is the BGAV essentially? Why do we gather for an annual meeting and discuss business anyway? Who does that anymore? Well, there is no other answer to me than that we gather to do one thing, to do as we have been admonished to do by Paul in Ephesians 4, to "build up the body of Christ." I think it is important that we see ourselves for what we really are. More |

Chaplain Service of the Churches of Virginia, Inc., was founded in 1920, with the Baptist General Association of Virginia being one of the seven founding denominations. Today Chaplain Service is the official agency to assign chaplains to all Virginia prisons and juvenile institutions. Currently, chaplains are assigned to 33 prisons and four juvenile correctional centers. Chaplain Service receives no federal funds. The support for this prison ministry comes from churches, foundations, businesses, and individuals. Chaplains must be a graduate of an accredited college or university, a graduate of an accredited seminary, and be ordained and endorsed by their denomination. Visit their website.
Did You Know?
-
That 5,000 volunteers in Virginia assist the chaplains with worship services, Bible studies, Prison Fellowship seminars, revivals, and musical programs?
-
That last year there were 810 professions of faith in Virginia prisons, and 433 baptisms?
-
That the budget of Chaplain Service has increased from $400,000 in 1995 to $1,260,000 this year?
-
That 10,000 prisoners will be released this year? Our prayer is that they will become responsible Christian citizens and will not return to lives of crime. |

Volunteer Teams Needed for Disaster Recovery in Jamaica
In August, the island nation of Jamaica was hit hard by Hurricane Dean. Virginia Baptists share an active and close partnership with the Jamaica Baptist Union, and the JBU has asked for our help in support of their desired recovery ministries. Virginia Baptist World Mission Initiatives recovery funds will provide funding to repair the roofs of thirteen houses, seven churches, and the JBU's camp and conference center (Nutshell).
Twelve Virginia Baptist volunteer teams of 6-10 members are needed for one-week assignments. One member of each team must be knowledgeable and experienced in roofing. The expenses will be $60 per person per day for in-country travel, housing, and meals, plus airfare (estimated at $800-1000 per person round trip). The VBMB will provide international accident/injury insurance and construction materials.
If you are interested in forming a team, please contact Glocal Missions & Evangelism team members Craig Waddell (craig.waddell@vbmb.org), Nichole Bulls (nichole.bulls@vbmb.org), or Terry Raines (terry.raines@vbmb.org) by email or by calling 800.255.2428 or 804.915.5000. |

This Month in Our History...with Fred Anderson
Last month this column told about a man - Henry Keeling Ellyson, the long-time executive leader of Virginia Baptists in the 19th century - and his vision: the planting of new church starts wherever the railroads placed depots. No matter how expansive and bold a vision, it can do little without money. Just as the old locomotives needed to be stoked with coal, the Virginia Baptist enginery needed to be fueled.

Merge Ahead
When we merge the gifts of 1,400 churches, Virginia Baptists have the capability to move forward together to advance the Redeemer's Kingdom. Together, we will grow our current churches. Together, we will plant new ones. Together, we will nurture and encourage our leaders. Together, we will develop new ones. All of this is possible through ministries that are supported by the combined giving power of 1,400 Baptist General Association of Virginia churches to Cooperative Missions.
