"Something about a Summer Sky - Its Beauty and Its Dangers"

Whether it's standing on the beach looking out at the horizon or riding through the Blue Ridge Mountains at dusk, there is something about a summer sky.  I have found myself quoting Psalm 19 often these days.  This personal prayer of the psalmist is both intimate and absolutely brilliant.  C.S. Lewis, who among other things was a brilliant literary critic, said of Psalm 19 that it is one of the greatest poems in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.  In other words, the psalmist has meditated most thoughtfully, and his offering of words is tremendously rich.  The words of his mouth and the meditations of his heart are not only acceptable, they are gorgeous.  More

The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty is a non-profit education and advocacy organization that has worked for nearly seventy years promoting religious liberty for all and upholding the principle of church-state separation.  The mission of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty is to defend and extend God-given religious liberty for all, furthering the Baptist heritage that champions the principle that religion must be freely exercised, neither advanced nor inhibited by government.

Did You Know?
  • That the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty is supported by fourteen Baptist denominations or conferences, as well as by various local churches and individuals?

  • That the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"?

  • That under current law, religious organizations, like other nonprofits that receive special tax exemptions under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), continue to be free to speak out on social, moral, and ethical policy issues, but may not support or oppose candidates for office without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status?

New & Notable
2006 Annual2006 Annual

The 2006 Virginia Baptist Annual is a history-making endeavor this year. This is the first time in Virginia Baptist history that the Annual is being offered in an electronic CD format.  In so doing, we believe that we are being better stewards of the Cooperative Missions gifts that have been entrusted to us for this publication, since the electronic version costs significantly less to produce than a print version. So in the next few weeks, keep an eye out for this small package in your mailbox!

For those with no computer access or limited access, please call 800.ALL.BGAV, ext. 1272, to request a printed version of the Annual.

This Month in Our History...with Fred Anderson
Every Fourth of July the flags fly from front porches and the bunting drapes many a public building. The afternoons may be devoted to backyard cookouts or family picnics, but the evening in a town or city worth its salt is ablaze with fireworks. It is a time of national pride, harkening all the way back to the patriots who secured independence in the American Revolution.

Where were the Virginia Baptists in that time of struggle and triumph?

Let's Go Fishing

Did you know that approximately 4.4 million people in Virginia have no religious affiliation? One of them may be your coworker, classmate, neighbor, or friend. As followers of Jesus Christ, we're called to take the Gospel to those who swim through the turbulent seas of life without God.

Throughout the Commonwealth and around the world, Virginia Baptists are fishing for people through missions and ministries that are supported by the combined giving power of over 1,400 Baptist General Association of Virginia Churches to Cooperative Missions. Let's go fishing!
