Greetings!

Welcome to the fourth edition of Advance Notice. We hope that this monthly eNewsletter provides you with relevant, useful information and resources. All of the contents are for your use. Please feel free to use the information and illustrations in sermons, in newsletters, church bulletins, and on your website. Additionally, you can easily forward it on to your church leaders and members so they can be connected to resources and information that enable the Baptist General Association of Virginia churches to advance the Redeemer’s Kingdom.

A Visionary Look Forward”

Have you seen the movie As Good As It Gets? The story revolves around Melvin Udall, a quirky character played by Jack Nicholson. Melvin is ill-tempered and neurotic. Most of all and worst of all, he says horrible, hurtful things to people. He meets Carol, a waitress played by Helen Hunt. Carol is a devoted, single mother with insecurities of her own, but, unlike Melvin, she has a no-nonsense way of shooting straight with others. Melvin and Carol finally go to dinner together. She has nearly drained her bank account to buy a special red dress, but Melvin insults the dress. Carol is crushed, stands to leave, but gives Melvin a last chance to say one nice thing to her. After fumbling a bit, Melvin announces, “You make me want to be a better man!” Isn’t it an amazing life experience to find someone who makes us a better person? More...

This Month in BGAV History

On July 18, 1802, Jeremiah Bell Jeter was born in Bedford County, a locale which became a nursery bed for so many of the giants among Virginia Baptist ministers of the 19th century. Jeter’s beginnings were modest. He only had the benefit of the “old field” schools of Bedford, the little schools operated on land worn out for planting. Surprisingly, the plant developed in those primitive schools of Bedford grew into one of the most influential figures among Baptists in America.
