ServantServant

serv·ant (noun): 1. a person in the
service of another. 2. a person
performing acts of assistance, help,
or aid. 3. one who serves God through
acts of obedience and piety.

Servants are individuals or teams who serve in hands-on mission projects for one week to six months.

Your backyard (and beyond) is brimming with needs, opportunities, and challenges for you to share the love of God. This is also true for our ministry partners, both within the state and far away in large metropolitan complexes and in isolated villages. From Culpeper to China; from areas ravished by Hurricane Katrina to regions devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; from Lebanon, Virginia to Beirut, Lebanon, our partners send project requests for individuals and teams, skilled and unskilled, experienced workers and first-timers. Some servant projects require a few days, others a few months.

How do I become a Servant?

Short-term Servants are needed for a wide variety of partnership missions with Virginia Baptist ministry partners.

The Virginia Baptist Mission Board offers several mission camps for Servants:

Impact! mission camps are four distinctive “turn-key” events that students (and adults) can be involved with during the summer. Impact! dates, locations, and other program and registration information are available here.

  • Impact Virginia! A construction-based project with corporate worship and incredible faith growth potential.
  • Impact Metro! An urban-centered experience that will focus on community service projects as well as Bible study and cultural understanding.
  • Impact International! An international project meeting the needs of our global partners. Students from the host country will also participate. Worship, food, projects, and fellowship will reflect the culture of each location.
  • Impact Now! A project that is in response to a natural disaster and will work to meet the needs deemed necessary by the affected community.
  • The PLUNGE is a learning opportunity that will thrust participants into an experience of learning and cultural understanding like no other event. Dialogue, simulation, personal testimony, and “play” will encourage learning and understanding of how we as Christians can and should respond to a world in need. For PLUNGE dates, locations, and other program and registration information, contact Dean Miller at 800.ALL.BGAV (255.2428), ext. 7264 or dean.miller@vbmb.org.
  • Transformers! is a four-day, adult construction mission project.Participants are placed on teams and make home repairs for families who find themselves in need. Transformers! dates, locations, and other program and registration information are available here.

Collegiate Summer Missions

A special form of service as a Servant missionary is collegiate summer missions. The Virginia Baptist Collegiate Missions Program is funded by Baptist Collegiate Ministries and is administered through a partnership between the Emerging Leaders Team (Greg Alexander serves with the EL Team as Collegiate/Young Adult Ministry Strategist) and the Glocal Missions and Evangelism Team. Collegians can serve for two weeks on a “GO Team” or for four to eight weeks individually or with a partner. In 2007 GO Teams will travel to Italy, South Africa, and London. Opportunities for longer-term summer missionaries are available in Virginia, across the U.S., and throughout the world. Examples of their service include ministry with orphans, inner city ministries, administrative internships, recreation-based outreach, and camp staff, to name but a few. More information on collegiate summer missions can be found at www.vabcm.org.
