ServantServant

serv·ant (noun): 1. a person in the
service of another. 2. a person
performing acts of assistance, help,
or aid. 3. one who serves God through
acts of obedience and piety.

Servants are individuals or teams who serve in hands-on mission projects for one week to six months.

The world we live in is filled with needs. Where there is need, there is both opportunity and challenge for the love of Christ and the good news of the Gospel to be lived and shared.

The opportunity can come as close to home as a conversation across the fence with your neighbor next door. It can come across town in your church’s office, in a community food pantry, or on a Habitat for Humanity construction site. It can come across the Commonwealth of Virginia in resort settings, in Appalachia, or in an inner-city.

The opportunity comes throughout the USA—in hurricane recovery projects on the Gulf coast, in a Native American reservation in the Dakotas, and in the hustle and bustle of the northeast.

Opportunities are present, too, throughout the world in the villages of the Caribbean, in the cities and countryside of Europe, in the schools of China, among the children of India, and amid the social struggles of South Africa.

The Mobile Mission Connection seeks to assist Virginia Baptists with discovering opportunities and meeting challenges as “Servant” people making a difference in their world.

Mission camps for Servants

Impact! Mission Camps are four distinctive “turn-key” events that students (and adults) can be involved with during the summer. Click the links below for Impact! dates, locations, and other program and registration information.

  • Impact Virginia! A construction-based project with corporate worship and incredible faith growth potential.
  • Impact Metro! An urban-centered experience that will focus on community service projects as well as Bible study and cultural understanding.
  • Impact International! An international project meeting the needs of our global partners. Students from the host country will also participate. Worship, food, projects, and fellowship will reflect the culture of each location.
  • Impact Now! A project that is in response to a natural disaster and will work to meet the needs deemed necessary by the affected community.
  • The PLUNGE is a learning opportunity that will thrust participants into an experience of learning and cultural understanding like no other event. Dialogue, simulation, personal testimony, and “play” will encourage learning and understanding of how we as Christians can and should respond to a world in need.
  • Adult Transformers and Collegiate Transformers are four-day, adult construction mission projects. Participants are placed on teams and make home repairs for families who find themselves in need. Collegiate Transformers is designed for college-age students, but students may attend either project.

Contact Dean Miller for more dates and information about serving through an Impact! camp, the PLUNGE, or Transformers.

Collegiate Summer Missions

A special form of service as a Servant missionary is collegiate summer missions. The Virginia Baptist Collegiate Missions Program is funded by Baptist Collegiate Ministries and is administered through a partnership between the Emerging Leaders Team and the Glocal Missions and Evangelism Team.

Collegians can serve for two weeks on a “GO Team” or for four to eight weeks individually or with a partner. In 2009 GO Teams will travel to North Dakota, Switzerland, and Kenya.

Opportunities for longer-term summer missionaries are available in Virginia, across the U.S., and throughout the world. Examples of their service include ministry with orphans, inner-city ministries, administrative internships, recreation-based outreach, and camp staff, to name but a few.

More information on collegiate summer missions can be found on the Virginia Baptist Collegiate Ministry website.
