Virginia Baptist Hunger Ministries
The Virginia Offering for World Hunger was established at the Baptist General Association annual meeting in 1982. Since that time, Virginia Baptists have given tremendous support to this offering, with contributions totaling over three million dollars.
The hunger offering that is collected by Virginia Baptist churches is very truly a “World” Hunger Offering because funds are distributed through our many partners here in Virginia and around the world to alleviate hunger.
In the past five years, Virginia Baptists have given nearly $1.7 million to the World Hunger Offering.
- Fifty percent of these funds leaves our state and is used both nationally and internationally through our many partners, such as the Southern Baptist Convention, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Baptist World Alliance, and others. A portion of these funds is currently being used in the following manner:
- Rice Buffer project in the Philippines – provides rice to families during the planting season when this staple food is harder to find and more expensive. The program purchases excess rice during the harvesting period and then is able to sell it during the lean times.
- Gypsy work in Slovakia - Provides low-cost lunch meals to gypsy children who attend school.
- The remaining fifty percent is used by Baptist General Association of Virginia churches, district associations, and other partnering agencies and ministry centers.
- $55,400 provided by Virginia Baptists to 46 individual ministries within the state (through August, 2009)
- Over 25,000 people in 6500 families received these funds
While we have no official “goal” for this offering, we anticipate receiving and distributing over $300,000 during 2009 with the hope of reviving this offering and setting a future goal that will challenge Virginia Baptists to rise up and face the giant we call “Hunger.”
