Have you ever tried to prepare a meal
from scratch without a recipe to guide your cooking
process? If you have, you know it can be an adventure
to try to get all of the ingredients in just the right
mixture to come together and make a delicious meal.
Planning youth ministry in the local
church can sometimes be like trying to cook a delicious
meal and some try to do it without a recipe. How much
of each area of youth ministry should my church endeavor
to integrate in order to make it a successful recipe
for youth ministry? In order to develop the faith of
your teenagers toward maturity, you must establish
program planning that is balanced in scope and sequence.
If you need help in putting together your youth ministry
recipe, that’s where we can help you. The Youth
Ministry Coordination Team (YMCT) is made up of youth
ministry professionals at the Virginia Baptist Mission
Board (VBMB) whose work focuses on a specific area
in youth ministry. Whether your need for assistance
is in Sunday School, Evangelism, Acteens, RAs/Challengers,
Missions, Worship or helping your high school senior “crossover” into
the collegiate arena, we have someone to offer you
guidance and expert instruction in order to develop
these areas in your church’s youth ministry.
On each of the following pages, you
will find each person who makes up the YMCT. They will
share a word about how their work relates to the overall
work of youth ministry. They will also include specific
dates for 2006 in which they provide programs or events
which will assist you in developing the faith of your
teenagers. Also, we have included contact information
including email addresses for each member of the YMCT.
At the end of this booklet, we have provided a cumulative
(January through December) calendar to aid you in mapping
out our programming for the year and also a list of
possible resources.
So, give us a chance to help you evaluate
your youth ministry and offer training and support
in order to create a recipe for your youth ministry.
Blessings,
Ken Dibble
Youth Ministry Strategist,

Ken Dibble, Youth
Ministry Strategist

The Youth Ministry Strategist,
Ken Dibble, focuses on identifying and equipping
teenagers who are sensing a calling for ministry
and service. This calling might be toward full-time
vocational ministry or it might be to develop
their leadership potential for strengthening
the ministry of their local church. The goal
is to increase the capacity and effectiveness
of the BGAV and its partners to identify and
call out future leaders.
This goal is accomplished in a variety of ways
including: infusing an emerging leaders emphasis
into existing events (such as the Emerging Leaders
Tracks—Level 1 & 2) at Junior and Senior
High Weekends and also an intentional call emphasis
at the annual Youth Evangelism Conference. It
will also involve creating some new “call
out” events for teenagers in which they
are provided with networking opportunities, discernment
assistance and fellowship with peers experiencing
a similar journey of call discovery. Check our
website (www.vbmb.org) for up-to-date information
of events calendared for 2006.
The final task of the Youth Ministry Strategist
is to educate ministers and congregations to
develop a “culture of
calling” within their churches to enhance
their own ability to identify emerging leaders. “Consider
Your Call” Sunday (celebrated on the last
Sunday of October each year) is the newest addition
to the BGAV calendar. This special event is designed
to support churches in the development of the “culture
of calling”.
In addition, the Youth Ministry Strategist continues
to serve as a contact resource for assistance
in the areas of Sunday School, Discipleship,
Vacation Bible School and general youth ministry
coordination. Ken serves as the VBMB liaison
to the Virginia Baptist Youth Minister’s
Association (VBYMA) in addition to coordinating
the annual Youth Evangelism
Conference and the Summer Youth Ministry Conference
each year. |

Strategist’s, Diane Smith, primary area
of ministry centers around equipping leaders
who relate to and minister with children, birth

Acteens and Youth on Mission
help youth grow spiritually towards a missions
lifestyle by enabling youth to participate in
local missions, study the Bible, and learn about
missions around the world. Both organizations
can be
customized to meet the specific needs of local
churches.
The Mag, a monthly magazine for Acteens, offers
spiritual enrichment and leisure reading articles
about missions. Acteens Leader provides lesson
plans for weekly meetings and special helps
for Acteens leaders. Youth on Mission provides
lesson plans for one whole year of youth missions
education. The Acteens Activators and Youth
on Mission Point Teams offer hands-on mission
experiences working alongside missionaries.
Applications are due November 1st each year
for the following summer.

Dean Miller,
Missions Learning Coordinator
800.ALL.BGAV x7264 |
|
The Missions Learning Coordinator’s,
Dean Miller, role is to help churches connect
to important mission events and projects such
as Impact Virginia!, student exchanges, virtual
mission opportunities, and other projects. Another
facet of his responsibilities that ties in with
all of these events is the healthy understanding
of ‘why’ a person might become engaged
in these activities. Educating our churches and
volunteers to be spiritually prepared and to
interpret their experience in light of their
walking and calling in and with Christ is an
important facet of my work.
There are a host of events being planned for
students and many events that can be customized
for churches. One of the most popular events
is Impact Virginia! which is an incredible ‘youth
camp’ with a purpose. Three hundred students
and their leaders will serve together on job
sites each and every day repairing homes of
families in need. Each evening participants
come together for worship and fellowship and
build life-long relationships with other students
as well as family members. |

There are three other Impact
Virginia! ‘type’ of projects currently
in final discussion phases with our partners
on the field. One of them would be with an area
on the Gulf Coast and the other two will be in
the Caribbean. More than likely these three weeks
will be in July. Cost will be the same as regular
IV! projects with the additional expense of travel
to the locations.
We will also be hosting students from at least
five different countries next year in a variety
of exchange opportunities. Youth groups will
be needed to serve as hosts for these teams.
New and exciting events and mission education
opportunities are being planned for 2006 that
will challenge you and your students. We are
always looking for new ways to help Christians
from around the world become aware of their calling
and potential to serve Christ. |
