Small in Number Means Nothing!

Dr. Tim Boschen, Pastor of Goldmine Baptist Church in Louisa, is quite emphatic when he says that small numbers mean nothing. When Pastor Boschen was called to Goldmine, there were about eight people attending on Sunday mornings. Goldmine, established during the colonial period around 1770, is located in the heart of rural Virginia in Louisa County; about an hour’s drive northwest of Richmond. Their history mirrors the history of Virginia – many highs and lows, but always maintaining a will to carry on. In the past few years, the church has been experiencing a rebirth. With a focus on spiritual growth and living a disciple lifestyle, Goldmine has been intentional about giving of themselves and living out their vision of “Bringing Comfort.” Attendance at Goldmine is on the rise, with over 30 in worship on Sunday mornings; and in the past three years, the church has ranked in the top 100 in per capita giving to the Virginia Baptist Cooperative Program. Pastor Boschen says he is not surprised by their level of giving even though he never checks the numbers. His take on it is that giving of yourself includes everything – your time, your talents, as well as your resources. When you live a disciple lifestyle, the giving of your financial resources just flows out from that.

The Value of Stewardship
This is the time of year when most churches are busy looking at budgets, giving, numbers, and whatever else needs to be crunched to prepare for the new fiscal year. If your church needs help or advice regarding stewardship or capital campaigns, please visit the VBMB website and click on Capital Campaigns or Stewardship (under "Support Services") for information on resources and how we can assist your church.

Annual Church Profile

ACP—Data That Makes a Difference

The Annual Church Profile (ACP) is a process of collecting data from Virginia Baptist Churches. By being a part of ACP Reporting, your church helps provide valuable data that enables a knowledgeable look at the growth and potential of Virginia Baptist Churches. Some of the information collected and compiled includes: church leadership, membership, Sunday school, baptisms, discipleship, financial information, Vacation Bible School, and missions. In addition, trends can be established and new ways to minister to churches can be researched. We at the Virginia Baptist Mission Board use this information to further the Kingdom Advance and are counting on you to help make a difference!

In Our History
  Fred Anderson

On September 15, 1909 – exactly a century ago this month in our history – Hargrave Military Academy opened to receive boys whose parents desired that they be educated in a Christian environment. Actually, the school began under the name of the Chatham Training School; but in 1925 the trustees abandoned the reformatory-sounding name and honored their most generous early benefactor, J. Hunt Hargrave of Chatham.

Traditional. Contemporary. Vocal. Instrumental. Hymnals. Screen-projected choruses.
The musical medium can vary from church to church but the end result is always an expression
of praise. We have a natural desire to praise the Lord and declare our faith through music.

Cooperative Missions offerings help to support ministries that develop
and nurture musicians in our churches. While they rehearse individually each week
in their own congregations, Virginia Baptist musicians come together to hone their crafts
through statewide programs that occur throughout the year such as the Handbell Festivals,
Senior Adult Sing & Share Festival of Praise, All-State Choirs, Summer Music and Worship Arts Camp, iPraise Weekend, and Gloria Deo Virginia Baptist Church Music Conference.
Our Virginia Baptist Women’s and Men’s Chorales offer praises on our behalf
around the commonwealth and the world.

The combined giving power of over 1,400 Baptist General Association of
Virginia churches to Cooperative Missions helps musicians around the state provide
worship experiences that enable us all to more fully worship the Lord with gladness.
