From Virginia to South Dakota and Back Again
Sixteen hundred miles may separate Virginia and South Dakota, but nothing can separate Christians who are drawn to work together to share the ways of Christ. This year, over 300 Virginia Baptists made the journey to Standing Rock, South Dakota to assist Baptist churches there with children’s, sports, medical, and construction ministries. Feeling the desire to serve alongside those who had ministered to them, Melda Lookingback and three other Native Americans from the Standing Rock Reservation traveled to Virginia to work with Baptists of the Roanoke Valley in construction and literacy ministry.
Judy and Bob Hetherington, who lead the ongoing ministry to the people of Standing Rock, plan to continue making the journey back and forth to minister in Jesus name as God leads. Judy says, “We feel like God is just opening more and more doors as we continue to follow His leadership.” Their prayer is that several new churches will be started in various locations on the reservation.
The ministry in Standing Rock is just one of the many ways your contributions to the Alma Hunt Missions Offering enable Virginia Baptists to share the love of Christ with those in need. Your church will be receiving materials for the Alma Hunt Offering in a few weeks. Make plans now to schedule a speaker to come and share about Alma Hunt Ministries.
Visit the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions website for more information.

Kingdom Advance Servant Opportunities
Servants are individuals or teams who serve in hands-on missions for one week to six months. There are many ways you and your church can get involved in serving others in Jesus’ name. In Virginia, you could serve by bringing a team to UVA to repair the roof and paint the interior of the Baptist Collegiate Ministries building. If racing is your thing, you can join with others at the Langley Raceway in the Peninsula Baptist Association to provide ‘mini children’s camps’ for the children of drivers, workers, and others. These are just a couple of the many requests we have for followers of Christ to join in the work of the Kingdom. Check out the Partnership Missions Opportunities list for more details.

As we celebrate our nation’s independence and religious freedoms, let us also remember
that our Baptist heritage supports the principle that religion must be freely exercised.
From our very beginnings, Virginia Baptists have valued religious liberty and separation of
church and state. To ensure that these freedoms stay intact, Virginia Baptists support organizations
like the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty through Cooperative Missions offerings.
As we stand at the crossroads of church and state, let us be thankful for the wisdom of our forefathers, grateful for our present freedoms, and dedicated to a future of religious liberty.
