Kingdom Vision

John Upton

No Matter What

These days I find myself wanting to get back to the basics of what faith and church and witness and spiritual nurture are all about. It has been a slow, enjoyable, and painful endeavor because words are strange little things to put to faith. Yet words have the power to create, for evil or good. Take the word "fire." It's just one syllable. But by common agreement it stands for something real and quite dangerous.

Mobile Missions Connection ServantPartnership Missions Urgent Requests

The Virginia Baptist Mission Board urgently needs volunteers for several  international partnership missions opportunities for summer 2009. A cooking team of 5-8 people is needed for the Youth Retreat for the International Baptist Convention in Grindolwald, Switzerland, July 1-10, 2009. Volunteers will work with team leader Bob Slaven, an experienced large-group caterer from the Shiloh Baptist Association. By providing a kitchen team, we will make it possible for IBC counselors to spend more time with their youth in activities and discipleship. The cost of this trip is $2000 per person. If you are interested, contact Craig Waddell. Click here for other urgent requests.

Fred Anderson

This Month in Our History...with Fred Anderson

This month in our history one of the Virginia Baptist ministry partners is celebrating a key anniversary. Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond is marking its 20th anniversary.

It all began late in the afternoon of March 3, 1989, in the First Baptist Church of Greenville, South Carolina. Elmer West, long prominent in Baptist life, was there along with others attending the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Alliance (now simply called the Alliance of Baptists). West remembers: "Following more than two hours of spirited discussion, the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of establishing a seminary at Richmond. After reminding us that it would take a great deal of money to start such an institution, a man stood down front following the benediction and held a large paper bag to collect cash, checks, and pledges for the new cause."
