Dear
,
Virginia
Baptists' Disaster Relief ministries request your
prayers and concern as we respond, or prepare to respond, to several
tropical weather systems. We encourage you to share this
information and these prayer concerns with your church.
Please pray for God's provision, protection, and peace for
all who may find themselves in harm's way, for all first responders who
endanger themselves to make others safe, and for all Disaster Relief
responders who serve to meet the basic needs of victims.
Tropical Storm Hanna
VBMB Disaster Relief has been in communication with our partners in the
Norfolk Area Baptist Association, the Virginia Department of Emergency
Management, and Virginia VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in
Disaster) to identify potential areas of impact and to prepare response
plans.
If Hanna brings high winds and tree damage, Disaster
Relief Recovery Chain Saw Units may be activated. If this storm
is primarily a rain event resulting in flooding, the flood waters must
recede before assessments can be accomplished and Recovery Units
deployed. Two Disaster Relief Feeding Units are also available
for duty in response to Hanna, and other units can be requested from
neighboring states, if needed.
For more the latest information, visit
our Hanna webpage.
Hurricane Gustav
In response to Hurricane Gustav, a VBMB Disaster Relief Mass Feeding
Unit is now in service in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Today, Feeding
Unit volunteers are preparing 5000 hot meals to be delivered in the
community. The meal count will probably increase, maybe double,
for the next few days.
Clean Up Recovery volunteers are cutting trees and
removing debris. Crisis Care Chaplains are making visits, seeking
to address the emotional and spiritual needs of the storm's victims.
For more detailed information, visit
our Gustav webpage.
